A Strong "Dollar"

Breakthru Blotter

Mr Vigorous
A SONG FOR THE TIMES

In this recessionary era, the temptation that many face is to abandon hope, notwithstanding the message of new US president barrack Obama, whose campaign platform was one of hope.

Here in Jamaica, where economic decline has been almost a generational fact-of-life, the despair is entrenched, and “nutten nah gwaan” is the standard answer to most greetings issued on the street.

Not so for singjay Mr Vigorous, whose single Looking for A Dollar has been enjoying good rotation on the airwaves. A journeyman on the entertainment scene, he pressed resolutely on in the face of rejection and adversity and is now beginning to see some of the fruits of that perseverance.
“I been in this business long time, its really all I know,” he points out, adding “when nuff people reject me and say it can’t work, I just keep trying, and you find that things come around.”

The song speaks to just that kind of resilience, telling of a man who keeps looking for gainful employment amid the hard times. It’s a tune that many can identify with presently and the resultant pick-up in airplay attests to that fact. Consequently, Vigorous is finding that his calendar is filling up with show dates – not an unusual occurrence for the man who has refused to wait on agents – but now including more of the significant shows and with the growing prospect of some more overseas dates in the near future, for which he is sharpening up a slew of new tunes.

By remaining upbeat and not giving up, it seems that Mr Vigorous’ search ‘for a dollar’ is about to culminate very happily, recession or no recession.
